Another Blog for the Low Low price of... FREE!
I have a subscription to Decanter Magazine and I rather enjoy it. Last months issue had an editorial by Andrew Jefford about the growing trend in wine writing on the web. His stance is pretty much negative toward all of the wine writing on the web. It’s not the writing that is his problem it’s the fact that people are doing it for FREE! Oh my God! I also get the feeling that he thinks you can’t trust any wine blogs because the people writing them don’t have any professional experience. It’s funny but I think the wine blog reader trusts a wine blog more than a magazine. They know that the people writing the blogs are spending their own hard earned money buying the wine and then using their limited free time writing about the wine. Andrew ‘Mr. Professional’ Jefford goes on to mention a guy who went to Hungary and documents all of the wines he could find; apparently it’s around 60 pages. He wonders who would want to read something so long, you can’t put an article like that in a magazine…and the guy isn’t even a professional wine writer...AND YOU CAN READ IT FOR FREE! Well I am only one person but I would sure like to read it.
This month Decanter has another article about the wine blog. This article has a different opinion and mentions how wine blogs are going to bring positive change to the wine business. Several blogs can create a buzz about a wine with people commenting immediately whether they agree or disagree. Could it be true that a million people are smarter than one? Well Mr. Jefford doesn’t think so…that is unless they are getting paid
