Geek, Snob or Wino?
Recently Grape Radio had a show “You know you are a Wine Geek when…”. The show signed off by challenging the audience to come up with their geeky moments…Do think any of these apply?
You make t-shirts out of my favorite labels.
You get a part-time job at a wine store.
You take pictures of the wines you likeand place them on you Ipod. This helps to remember them when you go wine shopping and you know what they look like.
You have a sarcastic wine blog.
I thought there was in important question in the show that brought up. What is the difference between a Wine Geek a Wine Snob and a Wino? If someone says they like the California Champagne they are drinking, the Wine Geek would correct them and proceed to tell them the difference between a sparkling wine and Champagne? They would tell them the different methods of sparkling wine production; Methode Champenoise vs The Charmet Method. The different grapes used; Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Macabeo, Xarel-Lo, Parallada. AOC vs the AVA. The different terms used around the world; Sekt, Cava, Cremant, Asti. The sweetness categories; Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Dry, Sec, Demi Sec, Doux, Chalky soil vs Sandy Soil. Maritime climate vs Continental Climate….well you get the idea. Turning his nose in the air The Wine Snob would say “That is not Champagne, Dom Perignon is Champagne, this is some cheap wine with Carbon Dioxide that some people call sparkling”. He then turns and walks away before someone asks a question because he really doesn’t know what Champagne is.
The Wino doesn’t care what you call it, but he will defiantly drink it.
Hmmm maybe I am a Wino Geek.
